Free Sparring
The purpose of Free Sparring (Ja Yu Dae Ryun) is to enable the students to practise their unarmed techniques in a safe and controlled environment, while learning focus, control, movement and timing.
All Students are required to wear the following approved protective sparring equipment: Head guard, Shin guard, Hand guard and Foot guard; males also require a groin guard. Mouth guards are optional at all beginner grades, but are highly recommended, especially for teen and adult Students.
Free sparring is to be light or no contact with taught techniques used to their training belt grade.
When a point is scored, the students both stop and bow to each other to acknowledge that an effective technique was displayed; both students will then return to sparring ready stance, Ki-Yup and continue free sparring.
All Tang Soo Do students are required to kick and punch above the belt and only to the allowed target areas. Songin Kwan sparring is different in application and Songin students will be advised of the different authorised attack zones and techniques.
There are no grabbing, pushing, throwing, tackling or striking the opponent when they are down.
Punches and (back-fists at Intermediate belt grades) are the only hand techniques allowed in free sparring.
Any excessive contact will immediately be called to the class instructors attention; technique modification and/or sparring vigour adjustment may be required.
Free sparring must be conducted with mental and physical control at all times.
Free sparring is a learning experience for both partners, and respect and protocol must be followed.
Work together to improve techniques and with the correct attitude and with a sensible and respectful approach - enjoy yourselves!
